What to do in Birmingham?

Moving to Birmingham to study at The University of Birmingham has been a big step for me.

During my last couple of years studying in Birmingham, I’ve tried to get involved in as much as possible on and off campus, as there are so many things to do!

On campus, I joined many societies that interested me such as BUDS – the university’s dance society, Baking and Cocktail Society. I attended weekly dance classes and even performed in the end-of-year BUDS show last summer! I’m also now the co-publicity officer in the Cocktail Society committee, which means I can get a lot more involved and also gain social media marketing experiences. It also meant we could go to the student groups guild awards evening, a fun chance to dress up fancy. Of course, we also have our course and society balls we can attend with course mates too! It’s also been wonderful to support friends in their various shows on campus, such as a musical concert held every semester.

Every year, the university holds Spring into Summer, a really fun week with lots going on outdoors, including food stalls, games and even free film screenings on the Green Heart. There is also Vale Fest, which was so fun to go to and to be able to support student artists and larger artists, especially as Europe’s largest student-run non-profit festival! UoBe festival also usually has many fun events happening during that week, including free rides on campus! Another big event on campus every year is Xplosion which is the American football game that everyone goes to watch, and it finishes off with a fireworks display.

Outside of campus, there is also lots to do generally in Birmingham. It’s always a lovely day out to Sea Life, shopping in the Bullring, exploring Digbeth or having a drink by the canal. The Botanical Gardens and Winterbourne Gardens are both so beautiful in the summer too. The Hippodrome also holds lots of exhibitions and plays; I particularly loved the Vincent Van Gough Immersive experience.
