An International Student’s Perspective: Adapting to Life and Learning at Birmingham

My experience

Birmingham has been the perfect city for me as an international student that made me feel like home instantly. Our campus itself is stunning - gorgeous redbrick buildings surrounded by green lawns and gardens. It's conveniently situated near the city centre as well. But what I love most is how insanely multicultural and diverse Birmingham is, you've got people from all over the world, which also means amazing food from every other cuisine imaginable. The music and art scenes are so vibrant with all the different cultures blending together.

But what I love most about Brum (don't worry, the nickname grows on you) is how getting around is super easy with public transit anytime and anywhere. The mix of modern and historic buildings with green spaces make the city feel homely- urban yet cosy. Brindley place is one of our favourite spots to wander for either brunch or an evening out with friends. I personally enjoy visiting The Canal House for its fantastic canal-side ambiance and The Box for its lively music performances. Walking around the canals is also super fun and comforting. If you're into anything vintage or edgy, you have to check out Digbeth's awesome independent shops, street art, and underground music venues. I've found amazing clothing gems thrifting there and if you’re visiting Digbeth don’t miss out on Luna Springs for the best brunch in town.

The social scene for students is the best! There are cute pubs, buzzing nightlife, awesome museums and galleries, and so much happening. It's been easy joining groups based on interests and making friends from all backgrounds. Whether it's live music, karaoke, exhibits - there's always something fun going on.

I really can't recommend Birmingham enough if you want a well-rounded University experience. It's got everything you need and more which will make you fall in love with the city.
