Picking the perfect university degree is hard. With a large selection of courses and modules, each with their own charm, it can be overwhelming to pick the correct one which suits you. You also then must factor in the location of study, where you will spend the next few years of your life. For me, the Aerospace Engineering programme at Birmingham enticed me the most due to the emphasis on ambition and taking risks, alongside the stunning university campus and reputation.

Aerospace Engineering - Pushing the limits of flight

Flight mechanics have been fascinating to me since a young age. I loved watching different components of aeroplanes synchronise to allow for trans-continental travel, and I was always curious about how these parts are designed. Aerospace Engineering stood out as the perfect fit to deepen this interest, as it combines problem-solving and creative thinking - skills which are focused on designing innovative solutions to complex real-world challenges.

Why Aerospace at Birmingham?

As previously mentioned, picking the right location is also an important consideration. Birmingham was an easy academic choice due to the vast opportunities for development presented within the Aerospace Engineering course, and each module having a distinct focus that builds both a theoretical and practical foundation. Every lecture has a purpose in teaching new concepts and ideas, which could then be applied through practical coursework, using exciting facilities such as the wind tunnel or flight simulator equipment.

I was also persuaded by the wide range of industry connections and support offered throughout the course. Whether it be advice for interviews or applications from careers experts, or wellbeing help from the student support team, the University fosters an environment which promotes academic excellence.

The University experience at Birmingham

Outside of academics, the University and its culture were paramount in me making that decision to join. The beauty that the Edgbaston campus holds, combined with the spirited student atmosphere, makes every day at Birmingham feel special. With a wide selection of student-led societies and clubs to participate in, there is something for every interest.

The on-campus events, whether that be markets or different formal occasions, bring students together to create memorable moments that showcase what makes Birmingham stand out.

The city of Birmingham itself was also something that excited me. Moving here allows you to appreciate it as a place of amazing culture and opportunity. Birmingham is more than just a city; it’s a centre of advancement.

Advice for prospective students

My simple advice for students considering joining Birmingham: go for it. University is a journey which encourages exploration and personal growth. At Birmingham, every day offers you a new challenge to overcome and a new opportunity to embrace.
