Choosing a university course can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re passionate about more than one area of study. When I first applied to Birmingham, I had my heart set on Computer Science — but being offered Computer Engineering instead turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Here’s why studying Computer Engineering at Birmingham has been such a rewarding experience.

A Course That Blends Computer Science and Engineering Seamlessly

What makes Computer Engineering stand out is the balance between computer science and electrical engineering. The course combines coding with hands-on technical work, allowing you to understand how software interacts with real-world hardware systems.

Rather than just writing programmes on a screen, we build and test circuits in practical lab sessions. This makes the learning feel far more engaging and meaningful, as you can see your code working within physical systems.

One of my favourite modules is Electrical Engineering, where we study digital and analogue circuits and apply our knowledge in lab-based projects. It really brings theory to life and highlights how essential programming is when working with technology beyond just software applications.

A Campus That Feels Like a Community

After attending an Offer Holder Day at Birmingham, when I first walked around the campus it was surrounded by greenery and it was all on one site – compared to other universities. It makes being a student a lot more convenient as I can study in the library and then attend lectures or society meetings easily. The campus is surrounded by greenery, creating a calm and peaceful environment that’s perfect for studying and relaxing. At the same time, it’s only a five-minute train ride from Birmingham city centre, so you still have access to everything the city has to offer.

A Decision I’m Grateful For

After attending an Offer Holder Day at Birmingham, I instantly fell in love with the campus and atmosphere. On results day, I didn’t meet the grades for my original course choice, but being offered Computer Engineering turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

After speaking to a member of staff and reading through the modules, I realised how well the course matched my interests. Now, after completing my first year, I can confidently say it’s the perfect balance between theory and practical learning.

Computer Engineering has opened my eyes to new career possibilities and helped me develop skills across both software and hardware. I’m excited about what the future holds, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice to study at the University of Birmingham.
