After graduating from my undergraduate with a Bachelor of Economics, I needed a new perspective in how I see the business world - the world that I want to jump into! At first, I was sceptical about the general course. I was worried about what if I become the ‘jack of all trades, but master of none’. Specific courses like accounting and finance, marketing, financial technology, or investment were tempting to me. But after weighing the pros and cons and being truly honest with myself, while always looking toward my future path, I am proud that I chose the MSc in Management at the University of Birmingham.
Looking at all the modules I will explore in this course, I get so excited; we get to explore the breadth of holistic aspects of business. Every module screams like you are opening the new fascinating behind-the-scenes of the overall business process. Through modules like Strategically Understanding the Business Environment, I learned many 'whys' that I didn't get in my undergraduate studies. Then we shift the focus to Digital Business and Business Analytics, which enables us to rely on data for decision-making. Sequentially, I will learn to uncover the 'whys' behind people's behaviour in an organisation through an organisational psychological and sociological perspective. I noticed that the value of this course lies in the helicopter view across multiple cross-business aspects that we learn from our diverse modules.
After finishing my first term in this course, I'm amazed by how the seminars, lectures, and especially the assignments, push us to maximise our critical thinking. I’ll admit I've not really been into assignments since junior high school, but somehow the alignment between the case selection and assignment questions makes me enjoy my postgraduate assignments on so many levels. The structure of the questions feels like they really appreciate how your brain navigates critical points. Never a dull moment with my first term assignments, and I’m so ready for my second term! And this is not my only point of view. I've discussed this with my friends from the same cohort, and indeed, we came to the conclusion that the assignments really did tickle our brains (in a good way), releasing dopamine as we explored our study cases.
At the Birmingham Business School, the MSc in Management is rich in activities and programmes related to our future careers and leadership. One of which I caught my eye on before applying is the Future Leader Certificate programme! This extracurricular programme provides us with a learning-by-journey, connecting the theories we have learnt in lectures with reality by practising with global companies. Past partners of this programme include the BBC, Siemens, and Lloyds Banking Group. As an international student, I really appreciate these initiatives. It feels like the Birmingham Business School always has your back in navigating your future. The University of Birmingham's career support is what matters most.
