A question I asked myself endlessly when going through the rut of applications. Deciding to take an industrial year as part of my academic journey was a multifaceted decision that promises to shape my professional and personal development in significant ways. Here's a closer look at why I chose this path.

Gaining Valuable Work Experience

One of the most straightforward reasons to embark on an industrial year is the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in the industry related to my field of study. Practically, the number one reason anyone would suggest a placement year. It effectively acts as a trial run, providing a snapshot of what working full-time in my chosen field will be like, acquiring skills that are not taught in the classroom.

Taking a Break from Academics

After several years of continuous study, taking a break from academics is something that is much needed. In some ways, I see it as the gap year I never had. A placement year offers a chance to recharge and return to studies with a fresh perspective and renewed motivation. This break also allows me to focus on personal development areas that are sometimes side lined by a demanding academic schedule, such as pursuing hobbies or learning new skills unrelated to my field.

Buying Time and Learning New Skills

An industrial year also buys me time to develop in other personal areas, such as learning to drive. Driving is a skill that offers independence and is often required for certain jobs. It's just something I want to learn. The flexibility of an industrial year means I can find time to take lessons and pass my driving test without the additional stress of academic deadlines.

Increasing Chances of Securing a Graduate Job

Employers increasingly value experience when hiring new graduates. An industrial year not only enhances my CV but significantly boosts my chances of securing a graduate job . It shows potential employers that I am proactive, have real-world experience, and can easily transition into a professional environment.

Opening Doors for the Future

The contacts made during an industrial year can lead to recommendations, mentorship, and even job offers. The saying "It's not about what you know, it's about who you know" holds particularly true in many industries where opportunities often arise through connections rather than cold applications. So I want to give myself that leg up in this game of life.

Earning Money for Final Year Expenses

Financially, an industrial year serves a great benefit. Earning a salary helps alleviate some of the financial pressures of university life, especially living expenses. Maybe I'll treat myself more in that final year given the money I manage to save.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my decision to undertake an industrial year is driven by a combination of practical, professional, and personal reasons. As the recent trend in my blogs suggests, I am very excited for this new phase. I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, confident that this experience will be worthwhile!
