This term, I have had the opportunity to be part of the University’s pitch-side scheme, providing physiotherapy and on-pitch support to our sports teams. I was allocated to the Men’s Rugby Union 1st Team - a placement that has already become one of the highlights of my physiotherapy training.
Before stepping onto the pitch, we received first aid training and sports taping workshops to prepare us for the demands of match days. These skills have been invaluable, and this placement has helped me build confidence in managing acute injuries, providing immediate first aid, and making quick decisions under pressure which are essential parts of working pitch-side. Since the start of the academic year, I’ve travelled with the team to matches across the country, including fixtures in St Andrews, Newcastle and Exeter. Supporting the team both at home and away has given me a real insight into the fast-paced and unpredictable environment of sports physiotherapy, and I’m excited for the rest of the season.
I began this year on placement in the Move Well Physiotherapy Clinic on Campus alongside working with this rugby team, receiving support from staff at Move well and UB sport. In my time at Move well I assisted in the concussion clinic, ensuring players with suspected concussions were assessed and followed the appropriate return-to-play protocols. I also developed my understanding of both acute and chronic injury management and expanded the ability to structure rehabilitation programmes that meet the specific physical demands of rugby.
Overall, this opportunity has allowed me to become part of a team, develop my leadership, and gain hands-on experience outside the traditional clinical setting. It has strengthened my passion for rehabilitation in sport and shown me how rewarding physiotherapy can be in a different environment to my previous placements. I would encourage any physiotherapy student with an interest in sport to get involved in this pitch-side scheme. It’s an incredibly fun, supportive and educational experience - and one that many students don’t realise is available.
