I have loved being a student ambassador during my first year at UoB and would definitely recommend it to anybody interested in the role! The role supports young people during campus activities and offers advice and knowledge to future students when they are applying to higher education. Here are some of the reasons why you should take on the job of student ambassador at UoB:
- University can be an intimidating prospect: a student-based role can help you navigate student life through an engaging and insightful lens and provide you with confidence and excellent communication skills. One of the primary responsibilities of a Student Ambassador is to represent the university within a diverse range of contexts, attending a variety of events and interacting with prospective students and their families. This role will sharpen your communication skills, making you a more effective and confident speaker, a valuable skill that will serve you well in any career.
- Becoming a student ambassador is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in student life and really start to feel at home on campus, as a major part of the role can be giving campus tours. It means that you will be super familiar with the locations of various rooms and buildings - which is very helpful because there is a lot of them!
- Becoming a Student Ambassador means you'll interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. This networking opportunity can open doors to valuable connections and friendships that can last a lifetime! It's a chance to surround yourself with motivated and like-minded individuals who share your passion for personal and academic growth.
- The role gives you a number of exciting possibilities; this summer I was able to work the Year 10 summer school residential with prospective Year 10 students, supervising them whilst living in accommodation on campus and taking part in taster lectures and academic sessions. We took part in a number of fun activities- including a disco at Joe's bar with a photo booth! It was an amazing opportunity to enrich my CV, and also meet lots of other ambassadors and make great friends.
- Finally, one of the most convenient parts of the job is that it is entirely flexible: you choose the shifts that you want to do - based on your timetable and commitments - and you also get paid for your time! It is definitely a rewarding role, and it has allowed me to develop confidence and clarity when communicating as well as a range of skills, including leadership and teamwork, in order to enhance my CV.
