Zoe and friends making heart signs and smiling for the camera

Hi everyone!! My name is Zoe, and I study English Literature and Creative Writing which is an amazing course that I’m enjoying so much. I feel like my passion for it only grows daily! While I love my course, I also enjoy taking part in societies in which I’ve made lots of great friends. Read on to find out what it’s like to be in the societies I’m part of...

Dance Club Latino - DCL

DCL is a dance society in which we learn different forms of Latin dance, the main ones being salsa and bachata. I’ve been in the society for two years now, and I became the secretary for the second year. Although being part of the committee is very rewarding, it can also be stressful and time-consuming, but I really recommend being involved as it teaches you so many skills - such as organisation. I also get to meet so many new friends who I’ve become very close with, I enjoy that they have shared interests with me, and I can meet a community of people who love dancing as much as I do!

We hosted a ball on 22 February with over 550 attendees, it was such a good night and everyone enjoyed themselves! I’ve used some of the pictures from the night as my cover photos as well as a picture of my lovely committee members! The night consisted of social dancing and chatting to people, I honestly had a great time! The last thing which I want to mention is how fun outings with your society can be! I’ve been to so many Latin night events now in clubs like the Rainbow Room. This means I can enjoy the music I like, and they’ve been some of the best night outs in university.

Film society

While I’m not officially part of film society, I attend their free screenings from time to time as it’s open to all university students! Recently, they had a screening of ‘Blue Valentine’ and I really enjoyed it. What I really enjoy about the society is that it helps me broaden my horizon when it comes to movies. I’ve always enjoyed movies and shows and was considered studying English Literature with Film. Therefore, being able to pursue my interests as well as discover great new films which I might not have found on my own is a great pastime. It’s usually in the Teaching and Learning building; you can bring snacks and it’s just overall a great atmosphere.

Poetry nights

University of Birmingham has some great poetry events which they promote via Instagram usually. If you’re brave enough, you can perform your own poetry or just listen to people’s performances and slam poetry! They’re usually hosted in the Grizzly Bear, but some are held in the Guild. I usually go with my friends from English and enjoy some drinks while listening to the amazing and talented students who perform their pieces. It makes me more motivated to write and honestly makes me so proud of my course mates!
