Students walk in front of red brick building

When I received my offer to study at the University of Birmingham, I was excited, but I still had questions. I liked what I’d seen online about the Birmingham Business School, but I wasn’t completely sure if it was the right fit for me. Attending the offer-holder visit day gave me a true insight into the university and allowed me to create an image of what my experience would look like.

What surprised me most was how welcoming and personal the day felt. It wasn’t just about showcasing facilities - it felt like I was genuinely wanted. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I immediately felt comfortable asking questions. I had expected a lot of formal presentations, but there was plenty of time to speak directly with staff and students.

One of the biggest things that helped me make my decision was hearing from the academics. Listening to lecturers talk about their research, industry experience, and how they connect theory to real-world business, made the course feel dynamic and relevant. The sample lecture was particularly useful because it gave me a realistic view of how the content would be taught and what would be expected of me as a student.

I also spoke to current Business School students, and they were honest about workload, assessment methods, and balancing study with social life. Hearing about group projects, internship opportunities, and the support available reassured me that I would be challenged but supported. It was helpful to hear how the Business School has its own careers service with strong links to employers, which provide useful services to aid professional development.

On the day, I learned much more than what is written in the prospectus. I gained a clearer understanding of module choices, placement opportunities, and how the Business School supports career development from first year onwards. I also got to explore the campus properly and seeing the facilities in person helped me picture myself studying there.

My advice to future offer holders is simple: go with questions prepared and speak to as many people as you can. Talk to current students as they give the most honest insights. Most importantly, pay attention to how the place makes you feel. For me, the offer-holder visit day gave me the clarity I needed that Birmingham is right for me.
