Seeing the Sun

Inspired by British artist Luke Jerram’s illuminated sculpture, Helios, The Exchange presents a new exhibition that invites you to step closer and discover the Sun like never before through the lens of University of Birmingham research.
The Sun is our star, a blazing sphere of energy that powers life on Earth. At the University of Birmingham, researchers study the Sun to understand how it shapes our world, influences our atmosphere, and sustains the environments we depend on.
Exploring our closest star in a new light
‘Seeing the Sun’ invites you to journey through The Exchange and discover how space science, environmental research, and cutting‑edge technology come together to reveal the Sun’s influence, from deep‑space observations to real‑world environmental applications, and what it might teach us about worlds beyond our own.
This free exhibition is perfect for curious visitors of all ages and brings leading‑edge research to life in the heart of Birmingham.
Facilities & accessibility
We’re committed to making The Exchange as welcoming and accessible as possible. There’s step-free access and accessible toilets on all floors, plus a Changing Places toilet on the basement level. Guide dogs and assistance animals are always welcome. If you have any questions about access, just drop us an email at engage@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
