I like the fact that our course is so varied, providing breadth not only in the choice of modules on offer but in the teaching methods too. I have particularly enjoyed our more industry-related modules, such as Mathematical Modelling and Problem Solving and Maths in Industry.
Join our three year full-time BSc programme comprising of taught and optional modules. You'll be assessed using a combination of exams, class tests, coursework and research projects.
You will start this course by acquiring a comprehensive introduction to several foundational areas in mathematics. All students take the same modules in Year 1 covering topics across pure and applied mathematics (mathematical foundations, calculus, linear algebra, analysis, probability, data, statistics, differential equations, and mechanics).
Alongside this you will begin to develop key transferable skills such as mathematical modelling in our module “Mathematical Discovery: Problem Solving and Programming”. We place a strong emphasis on supporting the transition from mathematics at school to university.
You will build upon the foundations provided in Year 1 to obtain a more sophisticated mathematical toolkit. You will take the compulsory module “Mathematical Challenge: Problem Solving and Programming in Business and Industry” which will develop key skills in applying your mathematical and problem-solving skills to real-world problems.
Alongside this you will start to tailor your studies towards your interests and goals with a choice of optional module on a range of mathematical topics.
Building upon Years 1 and 2, you will explore advanced and specialised topics. Your path here is highly customisable: you will choose four modules across a broad spectrum of mathematical areas.
Additionally, you will take a 40-credit independent project module to carry out in-depth research on a topic that interests you, under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

You’ll be taught by experts working at the cutting edge of modern mathematical research. As well as lectures, you’ll take part in small group, weekly tutorials. Our Mathematics Learning Centre is the perfect space for you to work in groups or independently. With a broad choice of modules, from highly abstract to highly applicable, you can specialise in areas that most interest you.
Developing your skills as a rounded mathematician means a variety of learning and assessment methods. You will take exams and class tests, plus carry out coursework and research projects. We'll give you regular feedback and assessment, helping you to build on your existing skills.
At the beginning of each module, you will be given information on how and when you will be assessed for that particular module. You will receive feedback on each assessment within 15 working days, so that you can learn from, and build on, what you have done.
You will be given generic feedback on any exams that you take and can have longer conversations about your performance with your personal tutor.

Applicants who take the EPQ and meet our offer criteria will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower plus a grade B in the EPQ. This offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice.
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.
If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September, including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
Students who are eligible and complete a Pathways to Birmingham programme will receive an alternative offer, which is typically two grades below the standard offer.
Our Contextual Offer scheme recognises the potential of students whose personal circumstances may have restricted achievement in school or college. If you are eligible to benefit from the Contextual Offer scheme, you will receive an offer which is one grade lower than the standard offer. You don’t need to apply for this – it will be assessed and applied at the point of application if you’re eligible.

If Parliament agrees on an increase in tuition fees, the University will increase fees for each year of study, normally in line with these changes and will communicate any change in the fees to you without delay. To help with the cost of studies, undergraduate students from the UK can apply for student finance through the Student Loans Company. The support available is made up of a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan which helps to cover living costs.

After my second year during the summer I completed an Actuary internship with Barnett Waddingham. I found out about the opportunity by attending the Mathematics careers fair organised annually by the department, where companies both big and small who are looking to recruit University of Birmingham’s Mathematics graduates come to talk to students about the programmes they have to offer. Whilst on this internship I completed many of the jobs a trainee Actuary would do in their first year of work, gaining an insight into this type of work and developing the skills required to pursue a career in actuarial science. Completing the Mathematical Modelling and Problem Solving and Maths in Industry modules as part of my degree prepared me very well for my internship. The problem solving and teamwork skills developed in these modules helped me both when applying for this internship as I had lots of examples to draw upon at interview, as well as when completing the tasks on my internship, as I was able to approach difficult tasks and present my ideas with more confidence. As a result of this internship I have been offered a trainee Actuary role after I graduate.
