Jack Garner

Left blind at 11 by a genetic condition, Jack is believed to be the first blind person to study Maths at Birmingham (developing his own written 'language' for his calculations). He was the first blind British person to climb Europe's highest mountain, Mount Elbrus. He also trekked Kilimanjaro and to Everest Base Camp. In addition to this, he has been part of GB Para cycling's training squad and has been competing in triathlons since 2011.

Jack GarnerWhat’s your connection to the University?

I graduated from the university in 2018 with a first, after undertaking the MSc Mathematics course.

Do you have any favourite sports? What do you like about them?

My favourite sports include cycling and mountaineering. Through cycling, I have enjoyed the opportunity to both compete in paracycling races in the velodrome, and also to undertake many endurance challenges.

I love mountaineering for the sense of adventure an expedition fulfils, through climbing to new heights, experiencing new weather and terrain, and having met many new people in different parts of the world.

While growing up, did you follow any particular sports stars?

Growing up, I really admired James Cracknell, for both his Olympic success and for the endurance challenges he completed after his Olympic career. Also, as a teenager, I was fortunate to meet Alan Rayment, a GB paratriathlete, who introduced me to triathlon, and who I took a lot of inspiration from along with other members of my local triathlon club.

What are you most looking forward to during the Games?

During the games, I am most looking forward to following the cycling events, and in particular, the paracycling races.

How does it feel to know your alma mater is hosting the Games?

I am proud that the university is hosting the games, and has a role in such a big event in sport.

How does it feel to be selected as a batonbearer?

I am delighted to be selected as a batonbearer, and in particular, it is an honour to be selected by the university and to have the opportunity to be involved in the games in this way.
