Catherine-Goode

Games Designer, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe
BSc Physics & Space Research (2008)

Feel free to think outside the box.

After graduating I got a position at Frontier Developments as a Junior Designer. Since then I have worked on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and Android/iOS titles.

What is the best thing about what you are doing now?
Games Design is exactly what I love doing in life, I'm coming up with a problem I wish to solve, set up prototypes to try finding a solution, then testing out the results. Skills I learnt on my course are surprisingly transferable.

What was the best thing about your time as a student here?
The best thing was finding people just like me, who are still my friends to-date. It was such a welcoming place.

In what way did living and studying in Birmingham live up to your expectations?
University was a great stepping stone for my career, was great fun at Birmingham and despite growing up in the city all my life, I discovered so much more about it once I had started at the University.

How did you grow as a person by coming to University? Did it change your life in any way?
I went from having no confidence, to being able to stand up for my arguments, present to groups, and pitch ideas. All critical to my job.

What advice would you give to current students?
Feel free to think outside the box, how your degree can be used for other careers, and embrace it.
