Professor John Nolan has been presented with a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List

The University is extremely proud to announce that Professor John Nolan BSc, MSc, DEng(Hon),CEng, FIStructE, FICE, has been presented with a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List “for services to structural engineering and the construction industry”. 

Professor Nolan is from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham, as well as Visiting Professor of Innovation.  A CBE is the highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, and is given in recognition of an extraordinarily positive impact.

Currently Professor John Nolan is the Chairman of Birmingham-based practice, Nolan Associates, and was the Past President of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), as well as Deputy Chair and immediate past Chair of the Construction Industry Council.

Among his many achievements, Professor Nolan led IStructE’s focus on improving the knowledge base of structural engineering graduates, influencing subsequent IStructE initiatives including the academics conference, essential knowledge texts and Structural Behaviour course.

Professor John Nolan was also a key figure behind the launch of the Supplier Recognition Scheme for the 2012 Olympic Games, which lifted the prohibition on construction industry suppliers promoting their contribution to the highly successful Games.

Speaking about his latest phenomenal success, Professor Nolan said, “I am very proud to have been nominated for such a prestigious honour.  I am also very conscious that it is often the leaders of teams that get honoured and that would never happen without the excellent work of their teams.”  He went on to say, “I would like to express my appreciation for the tremendous work of the organisations that I have had the privilege of leading including the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Construction Industry Council and Nolan Associates”.
