Professor Yulong Ding and Professor Xiao Ping Zhang led the delegation to the event which was held at the University of Nottingham’s Ningbo campus, on 16 October.

The Birmingham delegation was joined by colleagues from six other Russell Group universities who together explored collaborative opportunities for closer UK-China research and development. As part of the workshop Dr David Boardman, Dr Jonathan Radcliffe and Dr Bing Liu facilitated a number of interactive sessions investigating how the Newton Fund may be used to greatest effect.

The event furthered understanding of the challenges and opportunities around, sustainable energy and carbon reduction, identified opportunities for new partnerships and ways to strengthen existing partnerships and strengthened overall academic networks in this research area.

Following the workshop a report will be written and distributed to Russell Group universities making a number of key recommendations, highlighting how the UK and China may develop collaborations in these highly important research areas.

The Newton Fund is part of the UK’s official development assistance. Its aim is to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries
