Pint of Science Festival 2015
I'll have a pint of science, please!
Leading academics from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham will be taking part in the Pint of Science Festival across two venues in Birmingham City Centre from Monday 18 – Wednesday 20 May 2015.
Pint of Science is a non-profit organisation, aiming to deliver interesting, fun, relevant talks on the latest science research in an accessible format to the public – all in the pub! This setting allows people to discuss research with the people who carry it out. The festival takes place annually over three days simultaneously in pubs across the world.
This year for the first time, Pint of Science is coming to Birmingham and will take over a variety of venues across Birmingham City Centre for three nights.
Themes for this years’ festival are ‘Beautiful Mind’, ‘Our Body’, ‘Tech Me Out’, and ‘Atoms to Galaxies’ Talks from University of Birmingham academics will be located in Island Bar and Bodega, Birmingham.
Professor William Chaplin (School of Physics and Astronomy) will deliver a talk titled Sounding Stars and the search for Other Worlds. Commenting on his involvement in Pint of Science, he said:
This festival is a great way to allow the public to have an insight into the research that is currently taking place at the University of Birmingham, and the impact it has and will have in the future. My talk will discuss how we are using the natural resonances of stars, the novel technique of asteroseismology, to give us unique insights on the stars and their interiors. It is especially important in cases where the stars are also found to host discovered planets, since information on the star is needed to unlock the full information on the planets and these new “solar systems”. The talk will in particular highlight results from the NASA Kepler Mission.
It is a really exciting time to be studying stars and planets elsewhere in our Galaxy: the hunt for twins of our solar system, containing planets that might potentially support life, is now on. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts, and answering any queries - especially in a completely different environment.
