Two academic staff members from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences have been recognised by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours list 2014.
Professor Paul Cannon has been awarded an OBE for services to Engineering and Dr Simon Cotton has been awarded a BEM for services to Chemistry and Education.
Professor Paul Cannon is Professor of Radio Science and Systems in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Vice President and Treasurer of the International Union of Radio Science, as well as Editor of the journal Radio Science. A leading figure in radio science and systems, Professor Cannon’s research is pioneering in developing solutions in communications, radar and navigation systems.
Professor Cannon said, “2013 was a busy but productive year with the publication of a Royal Academy of Engineering report on how Solar Superstorms might affect technology and society generating a lot of interest. The OBE made it the perfect ending to a very satisfying year.”
Dr Simon Cotton is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry. In addition to his role at the University, Dr Cotton lectures widely to promote Chemistry and has worked to inspire young people as a teacher for over 30 years.
Dr Cotton said: “Receiving the BEM for services to Chemistry and Education is a compliment not just to me - but to the academic discipline and the importance of educating the next generation in this fascinating field. I feel privileged to have received this award for doing something I enjoy.”

Professor Cannon and Dr Cotton are among four University of Birmingham staff members to receive awards in the 2014 New Year’s honours list.
