Earlier this year the University of Birmingham Drone Society was born into existence and we promised we'd be back with updates once we were off the ground, so lots of good news to share! We have successfully built, calibrated, and flown our first drone which is a small (250 size) racing drone with a lightweight carbon fibre frame. Our members are currently getting to grips with flying the drone (see picture) during controlled indoor flight tests held once a week at the Guild of Students.

Thanks to the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Student Culture Fund we have just taken delivery of the components for a much larger (450 size) drone which we will be building before the end of the term. This new drone is going to be running an advanced flight stack which will allow us to carry out complex on-board processing. The drone will also be highly customizable which will allow us to perform beautiful aerial photography, attempt autonomous drone manoeuvres, and develop the skillset of our membership.

We've also had 15 minutes of fame thanks to a recent interview for B-Enterprising, the University's student PR team, where we are featured in the current edition of their newsletter.

We’d love to hear from you so if you’d like to come and talk to us about what you do, or if you just want to get in touch and learn more about us, then email eps-community@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
