MathSoc has gone from strength to strength this academic year and the Society is providing a wide range of events for our members. The following elaborates on some highlights of the spring semester for MathSoc:

The MathSoc Volunteering Scheme aims to build on last term’s successes and raise even more money for our official charity of the year: The Prince’s Trust. This term, the main charity event is the ‘MathSoc Weekend of Sports’ including a College of Engineering and Physical Sciences charity football tournament on Saturday 28 February. This event was the first of its kind and had been highly anticipated for weeks. The players couldn’t wait to get on the pitch for such a good cause!  With teams from JUGS (James Watt Undergraduate Society), Poynting Physical Society EESESoc, Engineers without Borders and MathSoc competition was tight. PPS came through as winners (unfortunately!) but we raised £248.50 on the day. 8 of our members also ran the Coventry Half Marathon on Sunday 1 March. We’ve already raised over £1,000 so far with hopefully more to come.

The term kicked off with a long weekend in Amsterdam full of culture, fun and adventure. With 78 members taking the twelve hour coach journey through the night, excitement was high. Over the weekend we visited several of the cultural attractions including the Van Gogh Museum, Sex Museum, and Anne Frank Museum, as well as bar crawls on both the Friday and Saturday nights. Everyone had lots of fun and plans are already underway for another trip next year.

Sport continues to be an important aspect of the society – the MathSoc Men’s 11-a-side Football Team, are doing extremely well in the Intra-Mural League, while the MathSoc Mixed Netball Team have found their feet in their first season in the league and are improving as the season goes on.

Coming up in March we have the final event organised by the current committee, the Annual Spring Ball. This year it’s being held at the Paragon Hotel and we are all looking forward to a really fun night with a three course meal, live DJ and photo booth.

Finally, our term as Committee is drawing to a close and the AGM will be held on the 5 March. We have really enjoyed our time in office and would like to wish the new committee the best of luck for the future.

Best wishes,

Sarah Graves, Vice-President
