Since a small group of six students became the new MathSoc committee, there have been huge changes to the society! We set up a new Facebook page over the summer, along with all shiny new branding for the society, to encourage all maths students to join in our events from Fresher's Week onwards, and to inform them of everything we were planning to do over the autumn term, and beyond.

When we started back at uni in September, we dived straight in at the deep end and ran many successful events during Fresher's Week including a 'Where's Wally Treasure Hunt' around campus and the 'Ultimate Freshers' Quiz' which was also a hit due to the piping hot free Pizza Hut delivery. This also introduced all freshers to their maths families for the first time (I have to say, it was rather fun two of us running all the way across campus in ten minutes trying to carry pizzas to feed the best part of 200 extremely hungry students!)

We started as we meant to go on and up to this date, not even 2 months into term, we have run these events along with our first MathSoc night out, which we had a huge turn out for (around 150 tickets were sold!). Our new buddy scheme was launched on this first night out and has really taken off! We had many different maths “families” gathering before the night out all around Selly Oak and the Vale, with the first years getting to know each other and their second year “parents”. The following week we also took part in the Inter-Society Exchange bar crawl, which was another huge success!

This week we look forward to our first Careers Networking Evening where many employers are coming in to give presentations and to talk to students about graduate and internship opportunities. This will be followed by (yes more free) food and a really personal and informative networking session - a great opportunity especially for second year students, and above! We are also planning many more fun events for the rest of this term - hope to see you there!
