The Poynting Physical Society has had an excellent year. Founded by Sir Henry Poynting as the Mason Science College Physical Society in February 1884 (predating the University!), we recently celebrated our 130th Birthday. While the structure and roles have changed dramatically over this period of time, the society still hosts a number of popular events for both staff and students in the School of Physics & Astronomy.

This year we have continued to support an 11-a-side football team in the University Intra-League, who train regularly and bring together students in all years of the department. As always, we held our annual ball in March, which this year was Great Gatsby themed. With 250 staff and students attending it proved to yet again be a great night, breaking recent records for attendances! Next year we would love to invite alumni to come along to the PPS Ball for a unique opportunity to interact with both student and staff. This would be greatly beneficial to the students, and has been regularly mentioned by students as something they would like to see. Due to our unique life membership, once you are a member of PPS you will always be a member, so to celebrate this we would love to have alumni who have witnessed the progression of PPS join us for this special event.

Among other things we have run several quizzes and we partnered with Carnival Rag for a charity bar crawl, raising £150. The new committee have recently been elected and plans are afoot for the coming year!
