BUCES

BUCES is well known for its packed schedule of events and this year has been no different. The 2017/18 committee have shown so much dedication and hard work it’s difficult not to be proud of them. Introducing new events and organising our annual ones has been so much fun and we hope you all enjoyed the year as much as we did.

Let’s have a little year in review….

Kicking off our social calendar was, as always, the welcome dinner and Coniston trip. With the welcome events having a record attendance, so many great cartoon themed costumes and a real commitment to having a good time, making it a great place to be.

Moving on to our tradition formal events; the Industrial Dinner and Winter Ball were both a hit with more than 200 BUCES members showed up suited and booted – and I know you all love an opportunity to look positively dashing. Over 17 companies attended this year’s Industrial Dinner making it our largest one yet! The list of high profile companies ranged from Exxon, BP, Atkins, Newton and many more providing a large variety of networking opportunities for everyone involved. There was great interest from our members to meet all these companies, and even great competition to sit at the tables of their potential future employers! Later in the term, the Winter Ball provided a lovely 3 course meal with drinks in plentiful supply and entertainment provided throughout the night including live music, awards and a DJ to take us into the early hours.

And I can’t list our socials without giving a Frank Morton shout-out. Frank Morton is the annual chemical engineering student national sports day where budding engineers from across the country compete in a huge array of team games. This year 220 of us headed up north to Leeds for a gruelling 30-hour slog where we participated in and won events such as hockey, rugby and even quirky sports such as quidditch. Unsurprisingly the ‘Brumblebees’ brought home gold for THE FOURTH YEAR RUNNING!! Thank you Ethan, our victorious Sport Rep!

We’ve introduced more sober events to cater for the huge variety of interests of our members. The free pizza staff-student Christmas lunch was unsurprisingly well attended, along with our trip RUSH, a huge trampolining centre. All of us here loved the range in events this year.

But, like the good engineers we are, we’re not just in it for ourselves. A plethora of charity events were held this year such as the annual pub crawl, ‘Selly Oak races’ and the Birmingham marathon and half marathon – all led by our very own Charity Rep Dáire Archbold and raised managed to raise a WOPPING £3,500 (to the penny)!

I hope you had an amazing year like we did. We’re now counting down to our end of year trip to Cardiff which will be the light at the end of the exams tunnel. And if you had a REALLY amazing year please consider nominating us for Society of the Year or any of the other EPS Societies’ Awards!

We’ve had a really great time being your committee, thank you and good luck!

BUCES love x

Your past and future Presidents,

Ezzat Ahmadouk and Josh O'Connor
