A virtual hello from ChemSoc!

ChemSoc

Hello everyone! And a big, hearty welcome back to the new academic year. A lot has happened since our last catch-up whilst at the same time so little *sigh*.

For any of those joining us as bright eyed first years, welcome! We are ChemSoc, your student-run Chemistry Society. As a chemistry student you are automatically a member of our community, which means one less thing to sign up for in Welcome Week! Despite restrictions to physical social gatherings, we are working fiercely behind the scenes to create some inclusive and exciting events to help you get to know some of your fellow course mates.

After the success of our ChemSoc and MathSoc event at the Birmingham Running Festival, the end of the last term fell a bit flat with the cancellation of our highly anticipated annual ChemBall. However (COVID restrictions dependant) we will endeavour to make our 2021 ChemBall one to remember.

Since then, we held a virtual AGM and voting which led to the appointment of 13 new committee members: Lucy Walker (Chair), Isaac Burnell (Secretary) – me *waves*, Jessica Silvester (Treasurer), Harry Waller (Careers Rep), Sam Dettmer and Dylan Kaler (Social Secretaries), Amy Locks and Olivia Baldwin (Social Media and Marketing Reps), Billy Grey (Sports Rep), Fiona Clark (Diversity and Inclusion Rep), Emily Cramp and Anabelle Kane (Charity Reps), and Robert Webster (Outreach Rep).

Fast forward a month and a bit and here we are planning for the new autumn term. So, you might be asking yourself, what do we have in store for you? Well, with the results of the google form, Billy is hoping to hold as many casual and campus league sessions as possible across a variety of sports. Fiona is setting up a student mental health ambassador scheme, as well as planning a mental health and wellbeing event in October. Alongside this, she is also planning poster events and a speaker to support Black History Month. Harry is planning some careers updates for when the buzz of Freshers has calmed down, and Robert is hoping to bring the brand new ChemSoc podcast to life, so watch this space.

Speak soon and stay safe!
