This term has been a busy one for CivSoc! As always we engaged our members on all fronts organising socials, industrial events and sports activities alike. This would not have been possible without the hard work and the dedication of the whole committee!

The Society’s RESPECT Scheme, which aims to link our members with civil engineering companies for both summer and year-long placements, is already in full gear. Events began earlier this term with the ‘Meeting the Companies’ series and will continue into next term with the RESPECT Interviews. We have also held the ‘Presenting Yourself to Employers’ and ‘CV Tips and Covering Letters’ workshops, as well as an ‘Evening with Murphy’, which were all very successful and popular with members. In the ‘Evening with Murphy’, employees from the contracting firm Murphy came to discuss their experiences and talk about the many opportunities available to students within the company.

Of course, we didn’t neglect the social aspects of the Society either! We put on a number of socials starting with a night out on Broad Street which saw all of the Society dress up in high-visibility jackets according to long-standing CivSoc tradition. It was a chance for the first years to get to know everyone in their year as well as people in other years of the course in an informal setting. We also organised a pub quiz which we used to raise funds for the society, and we did, finishing the evening with nearly £100. At the end of the term, we got in the festive spirit early visiting the Christmas Market on the penultimate week of the term. We finished 2018 with a Christmas Meal in Café Rouge, Brindley Place on the last Monday which was a huge success. Besides these main events, the Society also made sure to keep our members engaged with a few smaller gatherings such as playing rounders and other games on The Vale. We have a lot of exciting events lined up for you next term, so be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information! It is our hope that they will be just as if not more successful than they’ve been this term.

Our Sports Rep, George has been hard at work all term to satisfy the need for sports activities of all kind gauging the interest for different sports and preparing the society for the EPS Trophy next term. Our 6-A-Side football team taking part in the University’s campus league, with a good group of committed players getting together to train every other week. Friendly games for the 11-A-Side team have started with one against MechSoc, which we unfortunately lost, but it was a good event all the same. Another full pitch game against a group of lecturers and staff from the Department is in the works for the next term.  A few netball practices have already taken place in preparation for the EPS Trophy next semester. We have a great group of players committed to defending our title from the last year!

Thank you to everyone for a wonderful term, see you in the new year!
