Awesome spring term with MathSoc
MathSoc have had yet another fantastic term! Having put on at least one event per week there’s been plenty of events to be involved in.
Our sports teams have also been very successful, with our netball team winning the campus league and our football team second in the league! The weekly squash sessions have also continued their strong attendance from last year. We recently had our Alumni Day, where past members of MathSoc came back to the University to play our current netball and football teams, followed by a meal out at Joe's and a trip to fab!
MathSoc also won the EPS Trophy this year, with our football team winning the football section and our newly introduced Touch Rugby team coming third in their part. We look forward to the Touch Rugby team’s campus league debut next term!
We’ve also hosted two guest lectures this year, with Dr Tom Crawford coming from Oxford University to talk about the Mathematics in Sports, and PhD students from Reading University coming to talk about the Mathematics of Planet Earth.
MathSoc on tour continued in January, taking us to Berlin for a few days. We experienced the local culture and visited all the sites, as well as the clubs! In previous years, members of the Society have been to Amsterdam and Budapest, all for an affordable amount through Invasion.
The charity chosen for Fundraising February, during which we raise money for a chosen charity through different events through the month, was St Basil’s. All the funds raised through events such as pub quizzes, bucket shakes, cake sales and members running the Coventry Half Marathon are going to help combat youth homelessness. 12 of our members ran the Coventry Half Marathon and we raised over £1,800 in total over the whole of Fundraising February!
MathSoc also had another successful year at the Guild Awards, being nominated for Society of the Year and having two committee members nominated for Outstanding Individual Contribution with our Vice President, Sam Davies, winning the award! Sam has been a huge asset to MathSoc, our nominations reflect all the good work that has been put in this year.
The term ended with our biggest event; The Annual Spring Ball. This year is we had a suite booked out in Villa Park with 263 attendees for a three-course meal as well as live music and awards.
We can’t wait to meet all the new students in September!
If there's anything you think MathSoc as a society or any individual has done well this year feel free to nominate us for the EPS Societies' Awards!
