WISE is a society that aims to support and promote women within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at the University and is open to both female and male members who support our mission.
We have started the new academic year with fresh faces on the committee and have expanded our membership, welcoming students from the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. We are extremely pleased to report that our welcome event was a success and we were very happy to see so much interest in the Society from students from different fields of study. For our first social event we went bowling, which was great fun! Before the end of term we will also be organising a film night and a pub quiz.
Our first WISE Inspire event was held on 17 November and saw inspirational female role models from academia and industry speak with our members about their career paths, answer questions and offer their advice. It was great to see everyone thoroughly engaged and keen to find out more from our intriguing guests.
In the near future we will be running an industrial visit, which will hopefully be extremely useful in providing our members with an insight into potential future career paths. We are also jointly organising a conference day for Women in Science and Technology with the Computer Science Society (CSS) on 6 February 2016. The theme for this year is “Tech Inspiration: celebrating the women in technology” and more information can be found here.
Our passionate committee are extremely keen to provide as many events and opportunities as possible to our members to integrate, form networks and gain knowledge of career opportunities to help inspire the next generation of female scientists and engineers.
