Professor Davide Calebiro

Professor Davide Calebiro was presented the award following his lecture at the e-ECE 2020 virtual conference on 5th September 2020, in recognition of his contribution to scientific research in endocrine diseases.

The European Journal of Endocrinology bestow this award on a yearly basis to a scientist who has significantly contributed to developing knowledge through publication in the endocrinology field. It is one of the major Laureate Awards of the European Society of Endocrinology. Professor Calebiro received the award for his ground-breaking work on G protein-coupled receptor signalling (GPCRs) in endocrine and metabolic diseases.

Professor Calebiro, Professor of Molecular Endocrinology in the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research and the Centre of Membrane Proteins and Receptors (COMPARE), delivered his lecture on 'Shining light on membrane receptors', focusing on innovative optical methods developed by his research group to investigate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signalling in living cells with unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution.

He discussed how through use of these methods, his research group has investigated some of the fundamental mechanisms at the basis of GPCR signalling, and clarified the pathophysiology of endocrine diseases such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome.

Asked to comment, Professor Calebiro said he was “Humbled and honoured to be the recipient of the award”. He paid tribute to “the many students, colleagues and wonderful collaborators from all over the world [he] had the pleasure to work with during the past 20 years”. He added: “I feel very proud to be part of the European Society of Endocrinology family, which is playing a major role in fostering international co-operation.”
