MSc Midwifery

The new MSc Midwifery offers current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered adult nurses a route to a shortened two-year postgraduate programme leading to registration as a midwife. The NHS needs another 2000 midwives to ensure a safe, personalised maternity service and to achieve ambitions set out in the Better Births (2016) publication. The University of Birmingham has responded to this workforce shortage by launching this new programme.

MSc Midwifery

The new MSc Midwifery programme incorporates a virtual midwifery caseload (VMC) as a learning innovation.

The VMC is an asynchronous, digitally mediated simulation accessed by students weekly, aiming to mimic the midwifery continuity of care model.

Authentic case studies are developed using real stories from women recruited through various platforms.

A patient group has supported curriculum co-creation. This was flagged as ‘best practice’ by the Nursing & Midwifery Council at the accreditation of the Midwifery programme.
