
Tim Gardam CBE

Tim Gardam CBE was Chief Executive of the Nuffield Foundation from 2016 to 2024. Prior to joining the Foundation, Tim was Principal of St Anne’s College at the University of Oxford, a post he held for 12 years. He was a member of the University Council and Chair of the Admissions and Access Committee.
He is an external member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council and a member of the UKRI Infrastructure Advisory Committee. He is also a trustee of the Thomson Reuters Founding Share Company responsible for upholding the principles of the Reuters News Agency. He is a non-executive director of Wessex Water Services Ltd.
Tim worked for 25 years in senior broadcasting roles, starting at the BBC where he was editor of Panorama and Newsnight, and later becoming Head of Current Affairs and Weekly News. He was founding Controller of News and Documentaries at Channel 5 from 1996-1998 and Director of Television and Director of Programmes at Channel 4 from 1998 to 2003. From 2008 to 2015 Tim was a member of the Ofcom Board and was Chair of the Ofcom Content Board. He was Chairman of the Which? Consumer Association Council from 2015- 2019.
Tim was also the author of the Department for Culture Media and Sport Review of BBC Digital Radio Services in 2004, and a member of Lord Burns’ Advisory Panel on the 2004 BBC Charter Review.
