Getting to campus

By rail

Birmingham New Street train station is a hub for travel from across the country, and links directly with the University via the cross-city line. Four trains an hour depart for University station, with a final destination of Bromsgrove or Redditch.

The journey takes about ten minutes. The centre of Edgbaston campus is a five minute walk from University station.

By bus

Numbers 61, 63, X20, X21, and X22 all run from Birmingham city centre to the University. Numbers 19, 41, 48, and 76 also serve campus and the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

There is a travel information office by New Street station’s Stephenson Road entrance, where you can obtain bus timetables and departure point information. Maps can be found throughout the city centre indicating bus stop locations.

By coach

There are frequent express coach services to Birmingham from London, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, and many UK cities. The long-distance coach station is in Digbeth in city centre.

For onward journeys to the University, follow the B4100 road towards the Bull Ring shopping centre where there will be maps showing bus stops and the route to New Street station; you can then catch either the train or bus as described above.

By taxi

There are taxi ranks at New Street station and throughout the city centre. The journey to the University takes around ten minutes, depending on traffic.

Local cycling and walking routes

Our Edgbaston campus is at the heart of a network of safe cycling and walking routes that stretch many kilometres and are often free of traffic.

The Worcester and Birmingham canal towpath runs from the city centre to campus and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Some stretches are also wheelchair and pushchair accessible.

The A38 cycle route offers a safe, segregated route from the city centre to University South Gate. The National Cycle Network: Route 5 also runs nearby.

Cyclist facilities

Cycle parking and shower facilities are available in numerous locations across campus, many open for visitor use.

Lime e-bikes and e-scooters can be hired for short-term use across the West Midlands.

The Edgbaston campus is three miles south-west of the centre of Birmingham.

Approaching from the north-west or south-east along the M6

• Leave at Junction 6 (signposted Birmingham Central) to join the A38 (M) Aston Expressway.
• At the end of the motorway, keep to the right, go over the St Chad’s Queensway flyover, then through the St Chad’s and Queensway Tunnel to join the A38 Bristol Road.
• Stay on the A38 Bristol Road for 3 miles. The University will be on your right.

Approaching from the M42 north

• Leave at Junction 8 to join the M6 northbound and follow the instructions above.

Approaching from the south-west

• Leave the M5 at Junction 4 (signposted Birmingham South West) to join the A38.
• Stay on the A38 for 8 miles. The University will be on your left.

Approaching from the M40

• It is easier to turn south on the M42 and leave at Junction 1, heading north on the A38 Bristol Road.
• Stay on the A38 for 8 miles. The University will be on your left.

Visitor car parking

Visitor parking is available at the North-East Multi-storey Car Park (Pritchatts Road, B15 2SA).

There are five floors in total, however, the ground floor is reserved for Edgbaston Park Hotel guests only. EV charging stations are located on the car park's roof level (charges apply). Please note that this car park does not have a lift.

Parking charges apply Monday to Sunday, between 8am and 6pm. This includes bank holidays and University Closed Days. Parking after 6pm is free.

Charges start from £3.40 and are capped at £10 (as of October 2024) Monday to Friday. If you park here at the weekend or on a bank holiday, you will be charged a flat day rate of £3.

Payments can be made through RingGo (location 15677) or via the payment machines on floors one to five.

Disabled parking is available at all our car parks and on campus.

If you require access to campus for business purposes, the department you're visiting may issue you with a daily visitor permit. Please get in touch with your main contact to arrange this.

Please be advised that enforcement procedures are in place at all University car parks and that penalty notices may be issued to drivers that fail to comply with University Traffic Regulations.

Birmingham Clean Air Zone

A Clean Air Zone is operation in Birmingham city centre. Vehicles that do not meet the emission standards for the zone are subject to a daily fee. Campus itself is outside of the zone, and it is possible to travel to campus from all directions without passing through it.

Birmingham International Airport has direct flights from locations in the UK and many international destinations. There is one terminal at Birmingham International.

Onwards journeys 

Trains run regularly throughout the day from Birmingham International station to Birmingham New Street, where you can change for University station. The station is connected to the airport via the free Air-Rail Link shuttle, which takes two minutes to reach the station and operates from 3:30am to12:30am daily. The station and Air-Rail Link are well signposted from the airport.

Taxis can be pre-booked through local companies, or you can take a black cab from the taxi rank outside arrivals. The taxi rank is operated by Complete Taxi Management.

If you are arriving in London, there is a frequent train service from London Euston railway station to New Street station. The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.

• From Heathrow Airport: Take the Heathrow Express train to Paddington Station and then the Underground or a taxi to Euston station. Alternatively, an Airbus runs from Heathrow Airport direct to Euston station

• From Gatwick Airport: Take the Airport Express train to Victoria station and then the Underground or a taxi to Euston station

By rail

Selly Oak campus is a short walk from Selly Oak station. From Birmingham New Street, catch the cross-city service. Four trains an hour depart for Selly Oak station, with a final destination of Bromsgrove or Redditch.

The journey takes about 15 minutes. Once you’ve arrived at the station, walk out onto the Bristol Road, turning left and walking about half a mile until you pass the Oakville Dental surgery and a bus stop. George Cadbury Hall will be on your left.

By bus

Numbers 61, 63 and X21 all run from Birmingham city centre to Selly Oak campus. You can catch these from Stephenson Street in the centre of Birmingham.

When you reach Selly Oak high street, you can join the Bristol Road for the last stretch of your journey to Selly Oak campus.

• Join the A38 going south, staying on it for 5 miles.
• You will pass Selly Oak train station on the left (approximately 3.4 miles from New Street). Go through two sets of traffic lights.
• The campus is about 1.6 miles from Selly Oak station. George Cadbury Hall is set back on the left.

Approaching from the south-west

• Join the A38 going north.
• Look for Bournville Lane Police Station on the right and a pedestrian footbridge overhead (approximately 1.3 miles from Northfield Shopping Centre).
• After these, there is a short hill, at the top of which you should see George Cadbury Hall on the right.

Visitor car parking
