The 1st Annual Colloquium, hosted by the School of Government and Society, the Department of Political Science and International Studies, and the Graduate Centre for Europe, took place on 27 May 2011.
The event was opened by Professor Colin Thain, head of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, and was followed by the first keynote address by Dr Shelley Budgeon, Director of the Sociology Programme. Nine Doctoral Researchers from varied disciplines presented their works at the colloquium.The colloquium sessions ended with the second keynote address by Professor Sarah Colvin, Director of the Institute for German Studies.
The colloquium attracted more than 60 University staff members and postgraduate researchers from varied disciplines. In her closing remarks, Dr Charlotte Ross, Convenor of the interdisciplinary MPhil in Gender Studies, acknowledged the colloquium as one of the biggest events in the field of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Birmingham thus far.
The feedback forms revealed that almost all attendees were highly satisfied with the overall project.

This Annual Interdisciplinary Gender and Sexuality Postgraduate Colloquium was conceived, organised, and coordinated by Ali Amirmoayed, POLSIS Doctoral Researcher in Sociology.
Following the success of the event, the postgraduate researchers involved in this project have decided to continue this interdisciplinary colloquium at the University of Birmingham in the coming years.
