Advanced Imaging Facilities

The University of Birmingham Advanced Imaging Facilities (COMPARE Advanced Imaging Facility, Microscopy Facility and the Intravital Microscopy Suite) provide access to a highly integrated, multi-modal bioimaging environment spanning fluorescence microscopy from single molecules to cells, tissues and whole organisms.
The Facilities offer expertise in ultrafast single-molecule and functional imaging, super-resolution microscopy, light-sheet and deep-tissue imaging, multiphoton microscopy, advanced sample preparation and quantitative image analysis. Users are supported across the full experimental workflow, from project design, sample preparation and training through to data acquisition, analysis and interpretation.
The Advanced Imaging Facilities form part of the UK node for Euro-BioImaging.
We are currently offering the following technologies through Euro-BioImaging: Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM), enhanced-resolution confocal microscopy including Airyscan and Stellaris, Single molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM) including dSTORM/PALM, TIRF microscopy, single-particle tracking, ratiometric FRET, FRAP, Ca²⁺ imaging, FCS, spectral imaging, light-sheet microscopy including iSPIM, diSPIM, lattice light-sheet and cleared-tissue light-sheet imaging, multiphoton microscopy and HPC-supported image analysis infrastructure.
Euro-Bioimaging participation is coordinated by Dr Mezida Saeed (Technical Lead) and Professor Davide Calebiro (Academic Lead).
