Our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes in Primary and Secondary provide the opportunity for students to develop phase and subject-related specialisms. Carefully integrated university and school-based learning experiences ensure that students are well prepared for life as an Early Career Teacher. Developed in partnership with school leaders in Birmingham, the West Midlands and Dubai, the Education Leadership Academy collaboratively designs, constructs and delivers outstanding programmes informed by leading-edge practice to support the future leaders of education.

Colleagues in the department work closely with The Education Equity Initiative. This initiative builds on our years of experience of teacher education, and includes a blended programme of study that works internationally with philanthropic organisations and underserved schools.

Departmental staff make significant contributions to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education programmes, Research Training and Professional Development programmes in the School of Education. The Department hosts many postgraduate students including those undertaking the MA in Teaching Studies and PhD research students, who are often practising teachers.

A range of research interests are explored in the Department of Teacher Education including aspects of literacy, teacher recruitment and retention, teacher education pedagogy and practice; professional development; professional mentoring; and international teacher education.
