Old Joe guided me home! What makes this clock tower even more special is its role as a guiding beacon in Birmingham's skyline. Personally, every time I'm in the vicinity of Old Joe, it feels like I am near my home in Birmingham. Its towering presence makes me feel “I belong here!”

Fond memories of life at the Medical School and University in the tumultuous 60s - demos, marches and Christmas revues . Memorable teachers and Guild Presidents. Good and lasting friendships were forged. Happy times. Thank you Birmingham.

Whilst Chair of the Carnival Committee in 1987, we raised £30,000 which was distributed across many and various charities in the area. And we had a huge amount of fun doing so. The Rag office at the top of one of the many staircases in the Guild was a safe haven for all of us where we had a lot of fun and achieved our goal of being able to support local charities - often by being just being daft and always by having a great time. The importance of such social committees in terms of life lessons and preparation for life after university should not be underestimated and for many of my friends and fellow Carnival participants, we learnt a lot from our experience, from each other, and from the Guild community. Thank you Birmingham for that opportunity, all those years ago!

My favourite thing about University of Birmingham is that it has always something to keep you going around the year. My fondest memories include the trip to the lake district, dollar hunt event, and grad ball.

My story is about playing football at the university, the beautiful game in the mid-70's. Back then it was both training and playing twice a week. Every Wednesday it was against other universities, either at home or travelling away to Loughborough, Liverpool etc. Our home was Wast Hills, with football, hockey and rugby pitches as far as your eyes could see but not just for us, we were joined by our active departmental sports teams. Wednesdays always ended the same, with us in the Union bar! Here we would join all the other teams for a thoroughly good time singing, drinking and playing bar games, yet still make our Thursday lectures. On Saturday afternoons we played the locals in the Birmingham leagues, they so enjoyed playing us students, with us living off their hard-earned taxes. However did we find time to study.

It is about entertainment and law and music and history and chemistry and biology and human and social biology as well.

Chris Hamlett

My grandfather (Professor Harry S Ferns)  emigrated form Canada and was a Professor in Political Science and was associated with the University for more than 30 years (including becoming Head of Department). I remember, as a small boy, being on campus where he used to take me and my sisters to the Vale to go 'fishing' in the canal (using a garden cane, string and red Leicester - safe to say we never caught anything!).

Jade Bressington

I studied a BA in Geography and graduated in 2003. I've also worked at the University over the last 10 to 15 years. My favourite place on campus when I was here was definitely the Guild. I would say that my favourite place on campus now would be the Green Heart and I come here quite often with my children as I still live locally. My hopes for the next 125 years of the university is that it would give young people the opportunity that it gave me and transform their lives and I think that that is what Birmingham has the power to do.

Savannah

I studied here from 2015 till 2018 and I studied English. My favourite memory and place on campus has to be the old library and runner up to that was definitely old Joe.
