The Implementation Science Programme, led by Dr. Arabella Scantlebury, is hosted within the Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science (CEIS), University of Birmingham.

Founded in 2025, this year will mark the first instance of the Implementation Science Conference. This is a unique opportunity to engage with the leading experts on implementation science in the UK. 

The day will feature keynote speeches by Dr Arabella Scantlebury, Professor Carl May, Professor Graeme Currie, Dr Jonathan Hazlehurst, and Dr Laura Sheard. There will be plenty of opportunities to network with colleagues, experts and industry.

About our Speakers

Dr Arabella Scantlebury

Dr Arabella Scantlebury is an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham and Deputy Director of the Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science (CEIS). Her research focuses on improving the delivery of surgical and urgent care services, using mixed-methods evaluation and implementation approaches. She leads the Implementation Science Programme and has led and contributed to multiple NIHR-funded studies examining how complex interventions can be effectively adopted and sustained in real-world clinical settings.

Professor Carl May

Professor Carl May is a world-renowned medical sociologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the creator of Normalisation Process Theory (NPT). His work has shaped global implementation science, providing essential insights into how complex interventions are adopted, embedded and sustained in everyday practice.

Professor Graeme Currie

Professor Graeme Currie is Professor of Public Management at Warwick Business School and an expert in health systems leadership and organisational change. His research examines how leadership, structures and collaborative working enable the successful implementation and spread of healthcare innovations.

Dr Jonathan Hazlehurst

Dr Jonathan Hazlehurst is an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Endocrinology at the University of Birmingham and Clinical Lead for the specialist weight-management service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. His work focuses on complex obesity, metabolic disease and the implementation of evidence-based weight-management pathways.

Dr Laura Sheard

Dr Laura Sheard is an applied health researcher specialising in qualitative methods, patient safety and health service improvement. Based at the University of Manchester, her NIHR-funded work focuses on understanding behaviours, systems and culture to drive meaningful change in NHS practice.
