HWB-NMR is managed by seven staff members who work closely with the facility's users to ensure that its services are efficiently run and easily accessible.
Teresa Carlomagno, Academic Director since Oct 2021, is responsible for strategic planning and interfacing with the University administration and HWB•NMR advisors, partners and funders. Research focus: integrative structural biology, NMR of macromolecular complexes, NMR of nucleic acids both in solution and in solid-state.
Sara Whittaker, Operations Manager since 2006, oversees the running of the facility and is the first point of contact for users with an interest in biomolecular NMR, providing support and training for NMR experiments on the ultrahigh field systems and for protein analysis.
Mark Jeeves, Scientific Officer, joined the team in 2015 and is responsible for supporting research involving fragment-based drug discovery and ligand screening by NMR as well as protein NMR. He also manages the NMR instruments used for metabolic analysis and is the first point of contact for users with an interest in metabolomics-focused projects. Research focus: fragment-based drug discovery by NMR.
John Kirkpatrick, Scientific Officer, joined the team in 2022 bringing all-round expertise in the management of high-field NMR spectrometers, the implementation of new NMR experiments and techniques, as well as in teaching the practical and theoretical aspects of NMR to both new and established researchers. He is responsible for the implementation of integrative structural biology approaches within the facility.
Megha Karanth, Scientific Officer, joined the team in 2022 and is responsible for the development of molecular biology methods, protein and nucleic-acid engineering for structural biology, as well as user support and training in the planning and execution of sample preparation.
Thomas Tarenzi, Scientific Officer, joined the team in 2023 and is responsible for the planning and implementation of computational strategies for structural biology and for their integration with experimental results. His research focus lies in the development and application of bioinformatics tools and molecular dynamics techniques, including multiscale schemes and enhanced-sampling simulations.
Nick Fine, NMR Laboratory Manager, joined the team in 2022 and is responsible for the facility's buildings maintenance & servicing, health & safety, and cryogen supplies, as well as routine NMR performance tests.
The NMR staff are affiliated with the Institute of Cancer & Genomic Sciences within the College of Medical & Dental Sciences & School of Biosciences within the College of Life & Environmental Sciences.
