The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce a number of scholarships worth up to £10,000 each for international-fee-paying students from select European countries intending to study a postgraduate taught Masters degree commencing in September 2026.

A number of these scholarships will be ring-fenced for international-fee-paying current students and alumni from our partners based in Europe: KU Leuven, Leiden University, Lund University, University College Dublin, University of Amsterdam, University of Helsinki, University of Paris-Saclay and University of Zurich. 

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit to high-performing students starting their University of Birmingham programme in 2026/27 academic year.

Who can apply?

The scholarship is open to applicants who meet one of the following categories:

  1. Students who are domiciled in (permanently living in) one of the following countries: France, Germany, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway or Spain;
  2. OR current students or alumni from one of our partner institutes in Europe: KU Leuven, Leiden University, Lund University, University College Dublin, University of Amsterdam, University of Helsinki, University of Paris-Saclay and University of Zurich.

As well as being from one of these groups, to be eligible for the scholarship, students must:

  • Be classed by the university as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee purposes and be able to pay the outstanding tuition fees not covered by the scholarship.
  • Have received an offer for a full-time postgraduate programme starting September 2026.
  • Accept an unconditional offer from the University of Birmingham by the deadline of 30 June 2026. This includes paying the £3,000 deposit by the deadline.
  • Be studying an eligible 180-credit postgraduate taught degree in the 2026/27 academic year as listed below.
  • Meet the academic conditions of their offer to the programme.
  • Be domiciled in one of the eligible countries, or be a current student or alum from one of our partners.
  • Have sufficient funds to cover the full cost of living at the University of Birmingham, plus any visa/travel expenses associated with studying in the UK.

Please note that distance-learning and postgraduate research programmes are not eligible for this award, such as but not limited to MPhil, MRes and PhDs.

Students already registered and studying on a programme at the University of Birmingham in the UK are not eligible for this scholarship.

The allocation of the award will be made based on academic excellence.

Who can apply?

Students of all nationalities can apply for the scholarship provided that they are either:

  1. Permanently living in ('domiciled in') France, Germany, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway or Spain;
  2. OR Are a current student or alum from one of our partners: KU Leuven, Leiden University, Lund University, University College Dublin, University of Amsterdam, University of Helsinki and University of Zurich.

All applicants must be also be classified as an international student for tuition fee payments for an eligible 180-credit postgraduate taught Masters commencing in September 2026.

How to Apply

To apply for the scholarship students must complete the linked scholarship application form.

When completing the application form, applicants will be asked about their undergraduate studies (in progress or completed) and the postgraduate course that has been applied for at the University of Birmingham.

Awards will be made upon the basis of academic merit to support the highest-performing students.

What is the value of the award?

The scholarships will be worth up to £10,000 each and will be applied directly as a tuition fee reduction for the successful awardees' first year of study on a full-time programme delivered at our Birmingham, UK campus.

When will the scholarship be awarded?

Decisions will be announced in late July/early August and the scholarships will be awarded upon the students’ enrolment in September 2026.

Applications will be reviewed and marked after their respective deadlines. Successful applicants will be contacted typically within 3-4 weeks after the respective scholarship application deadline has passed. A scholarship offer email will be sent to awardees to accept or decline the scholarship offer; a deadline to respond will be included in this email. Students who are made a reserve will be contacted in due course as soon as any reallocated scholarships become available.

Due to the volume of applications for the scholarship, we are unable to offer individual responses to each application. Although we endeavour to keep you informed of scholarship updates, if you have not been contacted by the timeframes outlined in the above paragraph or by your course's start date, it may be the unfortunate case that your application has unsuccessful.

Which courses are eligible?

Eligible courses include the following, delivered at our Edgbaston Campus, Stratford-upon-Avon, partnered institutions or by distance learning:

  • LLM
  • MA (Taught)
  • MSc (Pre-reg)
  • MSc (Taught)
  • MPH
  • MEd
  • MBA
  • MPA

As the scholarship is only applicable to full postgraduate taught 180-credit Masters degrees, ineligible courses include:

  • MA/MSc by Research
  • MRes (combined taught and research)
  • Integrated Masters degrees (such as MSci, MEng and MBChB etc.)
  • Intercalated Masters degrees
  • Postgraduate Diplomas (PGDip)
  • Postgraduate Certificates (PGCert)
  • Postgraduate Research programmes (such as PhDs, PhDs with integrated study, EngD)
  • Postgraduate taught degrees that receive governmental funding (such as a NHS bursary or undergraduate tuition fee loans)
  • Schools Direct programmes
  • Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses
  • LLB for Graduates
  • Programmes delivered at our Dubai Campus
  • All top-up programmes

When is the scholarship application deadline?

Eligible applicants must submit a scholarship application to the Europe Postgraduate Chancellor's Scholarship by 23:59 (UK time) on 30 June 2026.

Applicants should have paid their £3,000 tuition fee deposit before applying.

What are the terms and conditions for this scholarship?

By accepting the award, the scholar will agree to support the University by helping with future student visits, being available for testimonials/ photos/videos for marketing purposes and engaging in other activities such as blogging (if required).

Do I need to submit a study application?

Yes, students must submit an application to study one of the eligible courses before applying to the scholarship. If you only apply to the scholarship and don't submit a course application, the University will not be able to award you the scholarship; scholarship offers are entirely contingent upon you having an offer to study on one of the above eligible courses.

I have received an email offering me the scholarship. How do I accept and receive payment?

If you have been successfully offered the scholarship, you will need to complete the acceptance form in your awarding email. Only once you have responded and accepted the scholarship will you receive the award; if you decline or do not respond by the deadline specified in your offer email, your scholarship will be reallocated.

After accepting the scholarship, you will need to accept your study offer and complete online registration to receive the tuition fee waiver; delays in completing online registration will result in the delaying of the scholarship payment.

By accepting the scholarship you accept the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

Is the scholarship paid to the University or to me?

The Europe Postgraduate Chancellor's Scholarship is a tuition fee waiver worth up to £10,000 and will be applied directly to your tuition fees; the waiver cannot be exchanged for any monetary value nor can it be paid directly to you. When paying the remainder of your tuition fees, whether by direct debit (monthly or termly) or a single payment, you will only need to pay the remaining value of your tuition fees minus the waiver. Tuition fee payments will only be applicable once a student has completed online registration and enrolment.

Will I receive an updated tuition fee invoice?

If you are successfully awarded the Europe Postgraduate Chancellor's Scholarship, your tuition fee waiver will be applied directly to your tuition fee account. However, you will not receive an updated invoice reflecting the discounted value. You will need to manually deduct the tuition discount from your full tuition fees to calculate your outstanding fees that you are liable for.

If I defer my course entry to the next year, can I still receive the scholarship?

No. As per the terms and conditions, the scholarship cannot be deferred and it is only tenable for one year. If you choose to defer your studies, you will need to re-apply for the scholarship in the next cycle if available.

I am studying an online (distance learning) degree, am I eligible?

No. The Europe Postgraduate Chancellor's Scholarship is only open to students who are studying an eligible 180-credit postgraduate taught degree full-time on our Birmingham campus in the UK.
