Chemistry at Birmingham

The School of Chemistry is one of the most prestigious Chemistry departments in the UK. Here are just a few reasons why we think studying Chemistry at Birmingham is the right choice for you:

  • We consistently achieve excellent student satisfaction - we are one of only four Russell Group Chemistry departments to achieve over 90% in the National Student Survey (NSS) for each of the last six years.
  • We are one of only eight chemistry departments in the UK where staff have been awarded a Nobel Prize, including the 2016 prize won by Professor Sir Fraser J Stoddart.
  • Our students will have access to the brand new collaborative teaching laboratory from 2018/19. The facility houses multi-functional labs suitable for subject specific and cross-disciplinary learning and team working.

Inspirational teaching

At Birmingham we believe in engaging teaching and learning. Indeed, we are one of only 4 Russell Group Chemistry Departments in UK to maintain over 90% Student Satisfaction each year over the last 6 years.  In addition to interactive lectures, you will have problem solving sessions, group work, extended research projects and throughout your first two years you will have small group tutorials to support your learning.

Social atmosphere and engaged students

The student led chemistry society, ChemSoc, runs numerous social, as well as career enhancing events, every term. The highlight of the ChemSoc year is the Annual Chemistry Ball, but there are lots of other events including termly social events, invited lectures and charity fundraising events.
