Sport at Birmingham

Sport is a big part of life at Birmingham, and here we believe that sport is for all; from beginner to experienced athlete, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved at Birmingham.

The University has 53 sports clubs, which accept complete beginners as well as those already playing at a national level; from Hockey and American Football to Korfball and Ninjutsu, there is a sport and a club for everyone at Birmingham.

Our sports teams consistently rank highly in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league (currently 7th, 2017), and we have a proud sporting heritage and fantastic facilities.

In 2017 we opened our multi-million pound sports centre, which includes Birmingham’s only 50m swimming pool as well as a range of fitness studios, an extensive gym and various other brilliant facilities. You can take part in a range of non-competitive sport and fitness opportunities, including group exercise programmes, which offers over 150 classes each week in a huge range of choices.

If you prefer to enjoy your sport from the sidelines, the University hosts an annual American Football event called xpLosION. There are also plenty of ways to watch sports in the city; including Edgbaston Cricket Ground, just a stone’s throw from campus, multiple championship football teams and a whole host of local teams and events.

You can explore the sport, health and fitness opportunities we offer, on the University of Birmingham Sport website.
