Moving to the UK

We are excited to welcome all new staff to the University and Birmingham. If you are moving to the UK or Birmingham for the first time, you may find the below links helpful to support you.
Accommodation
The government's 'How to Rent' checklist provides information on what to look out for when securing rented accommodation in the UK. You can look for rental property listings on sites like Rightmove or Zoopla, or on SpareRoom for individual rooms and house or flat shares.
The University's Edgbaston Park Hotel which is on the main campus site provides short-term accommodation for visitors.
Travel
Birmingham City Council's website provides more information about transport in Birmingham.
Take a look on our website for information on travelling to the University's main site in Edgbaston, and for our map of campus.
Healthcare
The NHS website is the main source of information to help you manage your health. They have included information on accessing healthcare for those moving to the UK. The NHS Services page provides more information on every day health care services, including pharmacies, opticians and dentists. GP (General Practitioner) surgeries are the primary point of contact for general healthcare in the UK and members of the public are encouraged to register with a surgery locally.
The NHS 111 service provides support for health symptoms online or over the phone, in addition to the 999 Emergency Services.
Living in Birmingham and the UK
The Birmingham City Council website provides information on moving to Birmingham, including finding a school, registering for council tax and others.
Citizens Advice provides free advice on practical day to day matters online, over the phone and in person at local centres.
For more information on things to do, places to stay and other recommendations, take a look at the Visit Birmingham website or the City Council's 'Things to do' page.
