Information for new employees
Congratulations on receiving your offer of employment at the University of Birmingham. We look forward to welcoming you to our community and are delighted you are joining us.
This resource (hosted by the Recruitment Team) provides general information to staff joining the University about working at UoB. It is designed to complement the information you have received in your offer letter. Your line manager should contact you shortly to confirm your induction dates and arrangements. If you require further assistance, please get in touch with your Hiring Manager or refer to your offer letter for the Recruitment Team's contact details.

As part of your joining process please email a photograph of yourself to staffid@contacts.bham.ac.uk at least one week before your start date.
We will then produce your staff ID card which should be ready to collect on your first day.
The photograph must be of a similar style and quality as a passport photo and sent as a .jpg file which should be less than 1 MB.
Action for your first week
Within your first week, once you have received your login details you will need to complete a series of steps on the Core system for staff. You will need to provide the University with your bank account details and complete other new starter tasks on the system (including mandatory training). Visit Core Systems to log in and complete these tasks with the support of your line manager.
For any new staff who want to be paid into an International bank account, you will need to open a case in the HR Service Portal and provide the required details.

- 40 days annual leave per year (pro-rata for part-time staff), including 8 bank holidays and 7 closed days
Your terms and conditions of employment determine your holiday entitlement.
Full salary is payable during holidays.
Professional Services, Administrative and other related staff
Full-time Professional services, administrative and other academic-related staff are entitled to 40 days off a year, made up of 25 days of 'bookable' annual holiday, seven closed days, and eight bank holidays.
If you work part-time or term time only, your holidays are calculated pro rata.

Academic staff
No specified periods of holiday are laid down for academic staff. Holidays must be taken in consultation with the Head of School, and normally outside term time in accordance with University practice.

Induction
Your line manager will organise an induction locally to help you settle into your new role and feel part of your wider team and the University. All staff are invited to a central University induction event within their first few months.
Further details about your induction, including HR's New Staff page and your department's local induction pages, will be made available to you once you start.
Learning and Development and the University
The University is committed to supporting its staff to develop and thrive at work. The University has its own People and Organisational Development Team which offers in-house development programmes, in-person courses and online resources which are free for staff to access. These are designed to enable staff to grow and develop in their careers as well as contribute to the leadership and management culture at the University. All staff are also provided with unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning.
Staff Networks
Our networks are run independently by staff from across the University and provide a supportive environment for staff to discuss common issues and concerns.
The networks also act in an advisory role to the University and are supported by the HR EDI and Wellbeing team.
As well as regular meet ups and social activities, the networks make a significant contribution to promoting inclusion on campus.
