Relocating to Birmingham

Relocation
Our staff are essential to our continued success, and we aim to attract staff from a wide and diverse pool of talent, many of whom come from outside of the local area.
We expect staff, once appointed, to reside within a reasonable travelling distance of the University. Therefore, taking up a role might involve a significant personal move, but we are committed to making the move to Birmingham as smooth as possible.
Relocation Assistance
If you are eligible for Relocation Assistance, this will be confirmed in your offer of appointment. The assistance may include the following elements:
- Relocation Allowance
- Relocation Support
Relocation Allowance
The allowance can be spent on permitted relocation goods and services. The value of the allowance and the process for claiming your expenses will be set out in your offer letter.
If you are provided with a relocation allowance, HM Revenue and Customs offers some guidance on tax and national insurance implications and exemptions. It also offers some worked examples to help you estimate what your costs may be.
Relocation Support
We understand that the administration of moving home can be overwhelming. Moving to a new area or even to a new country can also be confusing and time-consuming. We want to support staff at this challenging time.
If you are eligible for Relocation Support, we will provide the following services via our designated relocation provider Perchpeek:
- Access to Perchpeek’s award winning all-in-one App which is a one stop shop for all relocation needs
- Access to Perchpeek’s partnered vendors who offer quality and value for money
- An initial advisory call with a Relocation Coach to understand their requirements
- 12 months’ ongoing access to the Relocation Coach
- An expense management service which allows staff to purchase relocation goods and services directly from their relocation allowance, therefore removing the waiting time for reimbursement of expenses.
If you are not eligible for Perchpeek Services but you would like the support of a trusted relocation specialist to help you with your move, you can access the services of Gerson Relocation at your own cost. Gerson support staff with their relocations to Birmingham, whether they are domestic or international – they have a global network of providers, who provide a full range of destination and moving services.
