The significant contribution of two University of Birmingham academics and one honorary graduate have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Professor Alison Davenport has been awarded an OBE for services to electrochemistry and corrosion science, Professor Julian Bion has been awarded an OBE for services to intensive care medicine and Dr John Craggs has been awarded an MBE for services to education and to the community in Birmingham.
Professor Davenport is Professor in Corrosion Science at Birmingham, where she is head of the School of Metallurgy and Materials. A renowned researcher, with a high national and international profile, she is a world expert in the use of high intensity X-ray techniques for the study of corrosion and has inspired young scientists in the fields of corrosion, electrochemistry and materials, while also serving the wider scientific community, in particular as Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Science Board. Most recently, Professor Davenport was part of the Advanced Materials Leadership Council, advising the Government on strategy in materials science.
Professor Julian Bion is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) in the Institute of Clinical Sciences and honorary consultant in ICM at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. A prolific researcher and senior clinical leader, Julian leads and supports several national health service research projects in the UK, and has recently chaired the NICE guideline committee producing recommendations for the organisation of health services for acutely ill patients. A former President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, in addition to working with the World Health Organisation to develop guidance on sepsis management in low and middle income countries, he established an international training programme for doctors in ICM which has now been adopted across Europe. He led the development of ICM as a primary speciality in the UK with the formation of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of which he was the foundation Dean.
Dr John Craggs, is an alumni and was named an honorary graduate in 2015. John has lived in the region since 1979 and has made a significant contribution to University life having served on both Council, and most recently Court. John was also the President on the Guild of Graduates and Alumni Association from 2011-12.
