Dr Jo Parish, a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, has been selected to become a member of the Hamburg Scientific Advisory Board at the Heinrich Pette Institute for medical virology.
The Heinrich Pette Institute (HPI) – Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology investigates the biology of human pathogenic viruses. It is their aim to unravel the molecular mechanisms that control viral life cycles and virus induced pathogenesis. This research will provide novel targets and therapeutic approaches for established and emerging viral diseases.
The committee of the Hamburg Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is made up of eight scientists who are active in research and internationally acclaimed but not employed by the institute. The committee, which is made up of four female and four male scientists, includes international representation.
Dr Parish was invited onto the SAB as an internationally-leading expert in viral oncogenesis. She explains: "In this role, which is for the next four years, I will provide useful and constructive feedback on the HPI’s strategic vision and guidance for individual group leads. Feedback from the SAB is vital for the HPI’s continued funding from the Leibniz Association."
The scientific advisory committee offers advice on the institute’s scientific direction and conducts annual external scientific evaluations of the HPI’s scientific quality, structural development and organisation. The research units of the HPI are evaluated by the SAB in form of a two-day site visit at the HPI.
