The Neuroscience and Ophthalmology team, led by Professor Ann Logan, is an exciting representation of women in science bringing together colleagues from the Institutes of Inflammation and Ageing and Clinical Sciences.

The Neuroscience and Ophthalmology team, led by Professor Ann Logan, is an exciting representation of women in science bringing together colleagues from the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing and Institute of Clinical Sciences.
Creating a supportive environment for career development within the group has enabled these women to achieve a myriad academic successes, including PhDs, lectureships, fellowships, international collaborations and multi-million pound projects. The trailblazing group consists of 62% females above PHD level.
“Having good strong female role models within the institute has given me the confidence to achieve a lectureship,” said Dr Lisa Hill from the Institute of Clinical Sciences. "I have also recently been awarded my first project grant to develop new treatments for retinal disease, which has secured my independence as a scientist."
Dr Ghazala Begum has engaged audiences at the leading international conference on Ophthalmology in the United States of America. The oral presentation focused on ocular models of drug delivery which led to an international collaboration. “Working with most of the most supportive teams I had the confidence to give an oral presentation on ocular drug delivery," Dr Begum said. "This was a personal and great achievement for me.”
Dr Valentina Di Pietro has successfully lead traumatic brain injury research. “It’s great to have positive team dynamics enabling us to translate new treatments into the clinic," Dr Di Pietro explained.
Professor Logan is proud that they have a strong female presence throughout the group. On a daily basis they find themselves celebrating their achievements in hope to empower other women in science.
