We are delighted to welcome Dr Zacharias Frey-Shoukry as a visiting research fellow at Birmingham's Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing (ITSEE) for the month of September 2025.
Dr Frey-Shoukry is currently employed as a researcher on the DFG GenderVarianten project, investigating the effect of textual transmission on the construction of gender, with particular interest in New Testament manuscripts.
While he is in Birmingham, Dr Frey-Shoukry will be working on an edition and study of the prologues in a Greek gospel book kept in the University of Birmingham's Cadbury Research Library, a twelfth-century Byzantine manuscript known as Peckover Greek 7 (or GA 713).
Dr Frey-Shoukry has a wide variety of interests and expertise, as shown by his recent publications. These include articles on Creation in the Gospel of John (Journal for the Study of the New Testament, 2025) and the use of biblical verses by participants in the war between Russia and Ukraine (Zeitschrift für Theologie und Kirche, 2024). More information about his research may be seen on his University of Rostock homepage.
He is the third international visiting fellow in ITSEE in the last two years, following Dr Marianna Napolitano from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and Dr Silvia Cristofori from Link Campus University, Rome.
