The University of Birmingham has been awarded £1.2m in European Research Council funding through the Choose Europe for Science scheme.

As the only UK-institution to receive funding in the first round of the highly competitive international Choose Europe for Science awards, Birmingham’s MOBILITY programme will focus on attracting and retaining talented life sciences researchers in the field of molecular biodiscovery.
Set within an interdisciplinary research environment at the University of Birmingham, the programme brings together expertise in molecular biosciences, data science, engineering and translational research.
MOBILITY offers a competitive package designed to support long-term career development, with the aim of attracting researchers to work in Europe. The package includes personalised training plans, mentoring and clear progression pathways. The six new post-doctoral researchers will also benefit from opportunities to work across disciplines, collaborate with industry partners, and engage in research that connects discovery science with real-world applications.
By combining strong academic support with exposure to translational research environments, MOBILITY aims to help researchers move more quickly from fundamental discovery to practical impact. It also contributes to rebuilding research networks and creating a more stable and attractive environment for early career researchers in the UK and across Europe.
The award showcases the University of Birmingham’s dedication to supporting early career researchers, but also the EU recognition of our excellence in providing such support. We are very excited to meet and get to know the future candidates and work with them on their path to future leadership.
The award represents a significant investment from the University in both people and partnerships, with a focus on supporting early career researchers and accelerating the path from research to real-world impact. Applications will open in early October.
