Established by Birmingham Energy Institute, the Climate Innovation Platform (CIP) helps small and medium-sized businesses develop and commercialise clean energy and low-carbon technologies. Now in its fifth year, the platform provides entrepreneurs with business and financial advice, incubation support and access to a growing network of innovators.

HSBC UK’s support will enable 30 businesses to take part in the programme over the next two years.

Professor Sara Walker, Director of the Birmingham Energy Institute, said: ‘Our aim is to support the next generation of entrepreneurs who are developing the new technologies and services needed for our low carbon energy transition.’

‘We are extremely grateful for our partnership with HSBC UK. Through CIP training and mentorship, we have already made important contributions to the success of our graduating companies. We’re excited to see what future cohorts will go on to achieve.’

HSBC UK has supported CIP since it launched in 2021, and we’re proud to continue backing the platform and its new cohort of climate entrepreneurs.

Natalie Gregoire Skeete, Head of Societal Purpose at HSBC UK, said:

‘Supporting entrepreneurs is crucial to developing the technologies and services needed to contribute to long-term economic growth, and the Climate Innovation Platform brings together ambitious founders, cutting-edge research and a strong network.

‘HSBC UK has supported CIP since it launched in 2021, and we’re proud to continue backing the platform and its new cohort of climate entrepreneurs.’

Based at TEP Birmingham (formerly Tyseley Energy Park), CIP has already supported more than 100 entrepreneurs, some of which continue to be based on the site. They have collectively raised over £85 million in public and private investment, created more than 90 jobs, and filed over 15 patents.

With TEP Birmingham also home to the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre, a growing clean energy ecosystem is emerging in East Birmingham, connecting research, innovation and business growth alongside wider regeneration initiatives in the area planned by Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.
