Language Machines will look to address four linked challenges. Firstly, understanding the significant contributions the arts and humanities have made to Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation historically, which currently are poorly understood. Secondly, exploring how generative AIs' have transformed our linguistic reading practices today.
Thirdly, investigating the inaccessible language used around AI, based on high-level maths or metaphors of sentience), which impedes public understanding. And lastly, highlighting the creative possibilities we are missing out on as a society that the arts and humanities offer for future AI innovation, usage and regulation.
Led by Dr Rebecca Roach, the research team also includes Professor Max Saunders, Dr Dorothy Butchard and Dr Jing Hunag – all based at the University of Birmingham.
